The U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) Convention has recently announced a first of its kind collection of standards to assist manufacturers of dietary supplements in improving standards for quality and purity that can protect consumers. The USP Dietary Supplements Compendium (DSC) will also help manufacturers comply with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued by the art current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP). Under this practice, manufacturers are responsible for the quality of ingredients they use in the manufacture of their finished food supplements such as whey proteins.
The DSC is a comprehensive resource containing quality specifications of food supplements and their ingredients. These specifications include quality standards for identity, strength, purity and performance characteristics (eg, dissolution, disintegration) of more than 500 food supplements and ingredients. In addition to these standards, the DSC includes general and regulatory information, guidance documents, appendices and macro / microscopy, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in color images, which greatly simplifies the analysis herbal ingredients in liquid form, including muscle-milk making it a central repository of information needed for manufacturers of dietary supplements.

"With the current cGMP FDA requires that manufacturers dietary supplements determine the quality of ingredients they purchase from suppliers in setting their own specifications, the DSC can greatly assist manufacturers by providing guidance on appropriate specifications, including scientifically valid analysis and acceptance criteria. Consumers expect and deserve such protection. "
The DSC is a tool for manufacturing in:
- Development, manufacture and testing of new products from whey protein;
- Qualification of raw materials;
- Preparation for the international quality control and audits cGMP;
- Definition and validation of SOPs;
- The ongoing collection and batch testing of output and
- With precision packaging, labeling and storage products.
The DSC traces its quality specifications of the United States Pharmacopeia-National Formulary (USP-NF) and Food Chemicals Codex (FCC), publications USP standards for identity, strength, purity and consistency of medicines and food ingredients, respectively. These specifications include items such as animal pak, for example, that may be considered dietary supplements or ingredients, including amino acids, vitamins, minerals, plant items and their dosage forms.
USP-NF is considered an official compendium under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA), with food FDCA misbranding provisions applicable to any product dietary supplement represented as comply with pharmacopoeial specifications (and products are considered misbranded by the FDA, they do not adhere well).
