Muscle Marketing

For years, I worked with workouts isolation. In other words, workouts focusing on a specific muscle group. My training would be devoted to isolation exercises for the shoulders and a chest day, another day legs, arms and back another day and so on. You will see the majority of workouts created like this, I bet that over 90% training sessions are built this way. But is this the most effective approach to building a strong, healthy body?

I think that every workout is a good workout these days. It's so difficult for active people that I do not necessarily have on them when they focus too much on workouts isolation. However, if their objective is to develop overall strength, muscle mass and get a good sweat in the process, I would say workouts compound.

Compound vs. Isolation Exercises

Compound exercises move the body through more than one joint movement at the time as opposed to an exercise in isolation when it move only in the body by a single-joint movement. Probably the best exercise to demonstrate the difference is the barbell squat. This exercise moves up your body using the majority of your muscle groups and turns you to your ankles, knees, waist, hips, and to some extent even the shoulders and back. Compare this to an isolation exercise such as leg extensions, which only moves your body by bending a joint, the knee. Now you can see the difference.

Why Compound Workouts

As I said, a compound workouts are an excellent way to develop strength, add muscle mass and get a good sweat going. Most people, however, are not interested by building muscle mass. This is important for anyone at any age, men or women. When I create workout routines for women to 80% of them do say they will not build muscle mass, instead, they just want to tone. Interesting, although if you do nothing to tone, sorry you're going to put on some muscles. Attend training sessions to build up muscle mass that you will protect against injury as you age.

Adding strength is an important part of working out. It's so important that I not even spend much time for that. You lift the weight properly and regularly, you build strength. And who wants to be weak?

Getting a good sweat during a workout is a great thing! You feel like you've accomplished something because you're sweating like this feeling and you'll learn to love it too. Working to many different muscle groups going at once to really make you sweat and thus will burn many calories. The best of both worlds: building lean muscle mass and get a good cardio workout!

So which is better?

To provide full stimulation of muscle fibers, you should enjoy the advantages of both types of exercises. However, if you're main objective is to strengthen muscles, improve strength and get a good sweat, you should use compound exercises as the main point objective your workout.

Compound exercises allow you to lift heavier weights and work more muscle groups simultaneously with exercises isolation. It will save you valuable time in the gym while stimulating the maximum amount of muscle fibers. In addition, due to the increase the amount of muscles used for movement, compound exercises are more at sending your endocrine system a "distress call" to pump more anabolic hormones like testosterone and growth hormone in your bloodstream. Do not worry that you will not bulk be a bodybuilder sized machine, but you will see faster results while spending less time in the gym! Again, the best of both worlds!

Compound Exercises

Shoulders: Military Press, Hang Clean and Press, Arnold Press
Weapons: Close-Grip Chin-Ups, Dips, Close-Grip Pushup, Twisting Dumbbell Curl
Legs: Barbell Squat, Deadlift, slots
Back: Chin-Up, Pull-Down, Deadlift, Row
Chest: Push-Up dips, bench press

And just for the record you will not get Ronnie Coleman following a training complex that if you want, stop to worry about putting on "too much muscle mass" that will not happen unless you eat for it. This is another post.
