About 13 km north of the South African town of Upington, we can feel a hint of the famous Kalahari Desert. Located on the same road to the Trans-Frontier Kgalagadi Park, Spitskop Nature Reserve gives visitors an overview of some of this interesting region.
The Spitskop and nature reserve Monate Lodge is located directly on the opposite sides of the R360 road. Visitor Center Nature Reserve Spitskop handles all inquiries and reservations for both.
Monate Lodge is a great place to stay when visiting the reserve or Upington. The lodge consists of 6 self-roof thatched cottages and 43 food grassed campsites and caravan sites. The sockets are available to all sites and barbecue facilities. The ablutions are clean and functional. On a hot day there is also an available pool to cool off. A herd of Springbok, often seen roaming the region, especially during the hours around dawn and dusk. Its not uncommon for a turtle to come around looking for a piece of lettuce or other treat.
A permit is required when visiting Spitskop Nature Reserve. It is available at the visitor center. The reserve covers an area of 5641 hectares its main characteristic is a rocky outcrop, with stairs leading to the summit. This outcrop of granite which gave its name to the reserve and may be considered for a maximum of 40 km in clear weather. There is a small telescope on top to see wildlife. Hence, one can see many miles in all directions as the rest of the reserve is almost flat. Several years ago this rocky outcrop has been used as a stopover for passengers and their ox-wagons. Patches of grass cover most of these semi-arid, with some small rocky hills also visible.
Visitors May explore the reserve on foot or enjoy a game drive along the 37 km of gravel roads. Game is abundant, especially as the Springbok antelope, Oryx, Steenbok, Eland, wildebeest, Red hartebeest may be seen. In addition, there are herds of zebras is on reserve. Some bird species such as Ganga Namaqua and ostrich are also home here. Some of the smaller animals found here include Tortoise, Meerkat, and several well known species of snakes in Africa South such as the Cape Cobra and Puff Adder. The Meerkat is particularly fascinating to see how they stand on their hind legs into groups of 10 and 20 raised their environment.
The three hiking trails in the reserve to allow many hours walking through this fascinating landscape, and provide a "touch real region. En route we cross some water holes where more often than some animals may be seen with a drink.
After spending a day at the Nature Reserve Spitskop can expect a sunset and watch the sunset from an easy chair in front your tent, caravan or a chalet at Monate Lodge and really appreciate this beautiful region.
