Melatonin for toddlers with special needs.?
I have a 3 year, which begins in September and preschool does not sleep not at night. Most of the time it is for 4 or 5 hours, then nap for 2 or 3. All day / night. He has a condition called NT-SOD, it is blind (perhaps some light perception) with multiple endocrine disorders, and falls on the autism spectrum. Several moms in my support groups have suggested 1 mg of melatonin. Just a small dose of him staying asleep, no sleep. I have not been able to get a hold of endocrinologist my son again, and my husband is against it until it OKS Dr. (Easy for him to say he did not get up and stay with our son) I 'm just wondering what some side effects or things to look out for are. I want to start him on a small dose 300mcg and see how things go. We tried the bedtime routine full bath, lotion, massage, a book, lights out, etc. And he is back in a few hours later, if fell asleep at all.
Hello, the first melatonin is natural. I have a 5 year old child what was going through the same problems. I bought 5 mg of melatonin and cut in half for Kmak 2.5 mg, then crushed between two spoons powder and would give his recommended dose of liquid Motrin. I had to be sneaky with it! I did it for 30 days consistantly. You must stay on it, or it wont work. After 30 days, I Order melatonin and Motrin and she just was tired and ready for bed by 8 pm each evening. It became routine and she got used. It never had any side effects of one of them. Hope this helps.
