We are all familiar with the spice turmeric – the spice in yellow curry – but it does much more than good taste. In fact, there is continued intensively studied for its role as a powerful painkiller – and even an anti-aging nutrient.
The color yellow Turmeric is due to pigments called curcuminoids. Turmeric belongs to the Zingiberaceae, or ginger family. Curcuminoids have a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine to treat painful ailments from angina to arthritis.
The transformation in extract form Turmeric curcuminoids offers three different – all with powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-carcinogenic properties. And, apparently, the ability to reduce cholesterol.
However it is the ability of curcuminoids to act as an anti-inflammatory – and replace non-steroidal analgesic anti inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs – what are the hot new medicine.
A safe alternative in the treatment of arthritis
NSAIDs are the most prescribed drugs in the world, and most often purchased over the counter (OTC) drugs. But NSAIDs can irritate the lining of the stomach and cause internal bleeding. In addition, they can produce a gastric ulcer, an estimated it affects 20% of long term NSAID users.
This risk led to the introduction of a new type of painkiller called NSAID COX-2 inhibitors under brand names such as Vioxx and Celebra. The rapid success of COX-2 drugs was interrupted in 2004 when David Graham then the Deputy Director for Science and Medicine, Office of the FDA drug safety, has described as "perhaps the only Drug-disaster greater security in world history. "
Graham believes, on the evidence before it, that COX-2 inhibitor Vioxx may have caused as many as 139,000 heart attacks, strokes and deaths. Shortly after Vioxx was withdrawn from market, Celebrex, Bextra and other COX-2 inhibitors came to be linked to the same problems.
The tragedy is that COX-2 inhibitors proved slightly more effective than the products they replace. But there is another lesson. Synthetic drugs often too risk adverse, sometimes fatal, side effects.
However, where there are nutritional alternatives to drugs exist – derivatives fruit and vegetable ingredients – they are logically be preferred because their side effect is usually only positive – a body generally in better health. This is certainly true of the curcuminoids in turmeric.
Safe relief of pain – with multiple positive side effects
The curcuminoids reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 plus another inflammatory enzyme known lipoxygenase or LIPOX. In other words curcuminoids act as inhibitors of COX-2 drugs – but without the negative side effects.
Unlike COX-2 inhibitors, curcuminoids are clearly not cardio-toxic. They are powerful antioxidants – lowering LDL ( "bad" cholesterol), and protection against oxidation. They reduce blood pressure by damping inflammation in blood vessel walls.
Curcuminoids also prevent the further growth of smooth muscle cells of artery walls. This is important because the arteries are narrowed when smooth muscle cells grow thick. This leads to high blood pressure and potentially blocking the artery.
The curcuminoids make the blood less likely to form clots. They also improve the ratio of HDL cholesterol (the good form of cholesterol) LDL cholesterol (the bad kind).
All these actions are a powerful combination of cardiovascular protective effects. Thus, in direct contrast the result of COX-2 scandal, curcuminoids actively protect against the risk of heart disease. For good measure, there is convincing evidence that protect against cancer and Alzheimer's too.
The safety of turmeric has been proven at the highest level. In the United States, the National Toxicology of the National Institute of Environmental and Health Sciences at the request of the National Cancer Institute and the FDA has evaluated safety of turmeric curcuminoids. They concluded that turmeric extracts were not toxic with a wide range of potentially therapeutic properties. a wider class of phyto-nutrients called flavonoids, a family of compounds that occur in many foods of plant origin such as fruits and berries that are associated with health prospects of better quality. Unlike the highly targeted drugs developed by "Big Pharma", the flavonoids act on many different sites in the body, modification and improvement of several of our systems physiology in a coordinated way.
Thus curcuminoids also block a group of enzymes called matrix metallo-proteases or MMPs, which are actively involved in the process of ulceration. The inhibition of MMP is considered not only to protect against ulceration, but also against some of the key steps in tumor growth and metastasis of cancer.
When used to relieve arthritis pain, curcuminoids can usefully be combined with glucosamine, hydrochloride pomegranate extract, beta sitosterol, vitamin D and vitamin K as an ideal way to reduce the pain first, then start the process of rebuilding cartilage.
The role of curcumin and flavonoids in reducing inflammation and pain control is explained in detail by experts international health Dr Paul Clayton in his book Health and the Defense www.drpaulclayton.com.
Dr Paul Clayton has also assisted in the design of Uni-Vite nutritional JointShield a safe and natural interest for people with osteo-arthritis, curcuminoids combining with glucosamine hydrochloride, pomegranate extract, beta sitosterol, vitamin D and vitamin K.
